A Play

(The stage is a visionary dreamscape, with surreal, mystical elements—ethereal figures emerging from swirling, vibrant colors of crimson reds and golden auras, symbolic religious motifs like floating crosses and angelic wings intertwined with human forms, intricate details of light piercing dark voids, creating a fantastical, otherworldly atmosphere.)

Track 1: Toast (Prologue – The Call, ~3:00)

Curtain rises on a sparse, dimly lit room—Dad’s modest apartment, cluttered with unpaid bills and family photos. A single window shows a stormy night. Hip-hop beat fades in softly, like a distant choir. Dad enters, weary, phone in hand. He dials, paces anxiously. Sound design: Echoing rings, thunder.

Dad (soliloquy, blending into song):

I’ve set about the road you faced (T.01:00). I know I’m no ace. I’m asking, “Can I come to taste? Am I just waiting for my turn?” (T.01:15). Colors fade, but not your name, dear Jesus (T.01:30). I’ve a lot to say If you have the time to hear us (T.01:45). Take it back to basics I’m basically a kid for your attention (T.02:00). Thanks for all you did And everything that you’re still doing, Lord (T.02:15).

Phone connects. Mom’s voice projected offstage, cold and firm.

Mom (offstage): You’re late on child support. No visits until you pay.

Dad: Please… just let me speak to them. One last time.

Mom: No. Hang-up tone.

Dad slumps, stares at photo of Son and Daughter as children. They appear in ethereal spotlights, as memory apparitions.

Son (Child): Mom, can I talk to him? (Pauses, looking hopeful.)

Mom (offstage): He’s not answering.

Dad (whispering, then building to desperation):

Take it back to basics I’m basically a kid for your attention (T.02:00). Thanks for all you did And everything that you’re still doing, Lord (T.02:15).

He reaches into a drawer, pulls out a gun. Demons emerge from shadows—dark figures in hooded cloaks, moving like street dancers. Beat drops harder for hip-hop interlude.

[Demon Rap Battle Intro (~30 sec)]:

Yo, road’s end, no bend, friend’s callin’ but you’re stallin’, Debt’s wallin’, kids bawlin’, pull it, fall in—eternal callin’. No ace in the hole, soul’s toll, control lost, cost too high, Why try? Lie down, crown of thorns? Nah, just die.

Dad raises the gun, trembling. Sudden bright light pierces the stage. Angel Gabriel descends via wire or platform, radiant wings unfolding. Choral angels join from wings, harmonizing.

Angel Gabriel (commanding, inducing calm):

Weary traveler, lay down your burden. Sleep on it this night. The hidden One calls you to dream of life’s true value. Rest, and receive the message from above.

Dad (resisting faintly, then yielding):

I love you so much It makes me wanna wake my neighbors up (T.02:30). “Don’t you know the Word?” “Haven’t you heard the good news?” (T.02:45).

Gabriel touches Dad’s shoulder; he slumps into a chair, asleep. Demons hiss and retreat temporarily. Stage transforms: Projections of swirling snow, transitioning to dreamscape. Jesus appears as a silhouetted figure in the background, a constant presence—narrator and counselor, speaking only through verses.

Jesus (Narrator):

Isaiah 30:15 — “This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: ‘In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.’”

Jesus (to Son and Daughter):

Isaiah 41:10 — “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Jesus (to Audience):

Isaiah 49:23 — “Kings will be your foster fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers. They will bow down before you with their faces to the ground; they will lick the dust at your feet. Then you will know that I am the Lord; those who hope in me will not be disappointed.”

Angels (Chorus, overlapping for tapestry, fading out track):

I think I’ve gotta go Share this with them so they’ll know Salvations in the bag All you gotta do is say, “I know He took my place that day” (T.03:00 – repeat softly as lights dim).

(End Track 1. Intermission pause: 10 seconds of ambient beats.)

Track 2: January’s Son (Vision 1: Winter Awakening – Dad as a Lost Wanderer in Snow, ~3:15)

Stage: Vast snowy field projection, cold blue lights. Dad awakens as a biblical wanderer (like a pre-Christ exile from Isaiah), bundled in rags, trudging through “snow.” Son and Daughter appear as child guides, holding lanterns. Beat: Slow hip-hop with piano undertones, building to choral swell.

Dad (as Wanderer, disoriented):

I’m fighting day and night. I don’t know what’s right or what I was thinking (J.00:30). Closing off the door, no time to explore if this is dangerous (J.00:45). Take your children far, go and teach them arts in some abandoned space (J.01:00).

Son (calling out): Dad? Lead us all from war and put everything back in its place (J.01:15 – echoing as plea).

Daughter (joining): I know it’s hard, tears me apart every time I choose anything other than you (J.01:30).

Angels (Chorus, entering with harmonious overlap from Toast):

And nothing’s been the same. My angels Moved that stone away (T.02:00 – repeat for thematic weave). You finally came out saying, “Mary, it is me, your teacher” (T.02:15).

Jesus (to Dad, stepping forward slightly, addressing Dad directly): Isaiah 9:2.

Jesus (to Son and Daughter): Isaiah 40:31.

Jesus (to Audience, narrating hidden revelation): Isaiah 42:16.

Demons re-emerge, circling like wolves in the snow. Beat intensifies for battle.

[Demon vs. Angel Rap Duel (~45 sec)]:

Demon: Blizzard blind, mind confined, no sign of divine, resign—line up the shot, hot end to cold plot. Kids far, scar too deep, sleep eternal, cheap peace.

Spirit-Filled Person: Fight the night, light’s in sight, hidden might, take flight—storm’s passin’, last in His grasp, unmask the ask. Arts teach, reach beach from breach—breach no more, store of lore. The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters. (Psalm 23:1-2)

Dad (struggling, turning to Jesus):

Trapeze act, harder than it looks, take me back, buy me time (J.01:45). I admit I was a bit bold to leave you there but I thought Lord, I know you care (J.02:00).

Angels (Overlapping Chorus, repeating for lush tapestry):

Take me into your arms, my Lord.. Since the storm blew in, I’ve been carrying this (J.02:15 – echo with “He’ll show you how to be If you think that you can’t do well” T.02:30). Feel like I’m about to fall. If I stumble, will you support my mission? (J.02:30).

Jesus (saving gesture): Isaiah 41:13. Isaiah 43:1.

Dad (gaining resolve): Cut the life raft, let me go. I don’t want this kind of life, if my Lord can’t be alive upon my lips and in my heart (J.02:45 – fading as vision blurs).

(End Track 2. Pause: Choral hum bridges to next.)

Track 3: My Lovely Valentine (Vision 2: Love’s Redemption – Dad as a Prodigal Son, ~3:20)

Stage: A warm yet fractured dreamscape, shifting from icy blues to soft pinks and golds. Dad appears as a biblical prodigal son, tattered but hopeful, standing before a distant, glowing house representing divine love. Son and Daughter emerge as ethereal siblings, guiding him. Beat: Gentle hip-hop with a romantic piano riff, swelling into choral grandeur.

Dad (as Prodigal, yearning):

It reminds me of the saying, Son, there will come a time one day when you must choose who to defend and who to lose (V.00:30). My heart is a ball of love for you (V.00:45). To your house I brought a flower or two (V.01:00). I know it’s not the kind you like. I’ve traded all I had, I hope that you’ll approve, so I can see you in November, Thanksgiving (V.01:15).

Son (encouraging): Dear Christmas, things are bending (V.01:30 – a hopeful echo).

Daughter (joining): I want to see you this next year, on Easter (V.01:45).

Angels (Chorus, weaving Toast and January’s Son themes):

Colors fade, but not your name, dear Jesus (T.01:30 – repeat softly). I’ve a lot to say If you have the time to hear us (T.01:45). You said You would always be there [you’re] Loosening the knots That’s choking off the flesh’s desires (T.02:15 – overlap).

Jesus (to Dad, stepping closer, voice resonant): Isaiah 54:10 — “Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed, says the Lord, who has compassion on you.”

Jesus (to Son and Daughter): Isaiah 49:15 — “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!”

Jesus (to Audience, offering hope): Isaiah 63:9 — “In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.”

Demons slink in, cloaked in shadowy reds, tempting with despair. Beat shifts to a darker hip-hop drop.

[Demon vs. Angel Rap Duel (~45 sec)]:

Demon: Flowers fake, heartbreak quake, stake your claim? Lame game—blame shifts, gifts rift, swift end, bend to trend. Traded all, fall tall—call it quits, bits of hits missed.

Spirit-Filled Person: Ball of love, above the shove—dove’s flight, night to light, approve the move, groove in prove. November’s feast, least to beast—released, peace increased. The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. (Jeremiah 31:3)

Dad (struggling, then softening):

Don’t tell me that I can’t wash the feet of whom I love (V.02:00). My Jesus, he was there before the oceans and the wind (V.02:15).

Son and Daughter (in unison, leading him): Take me down to the river, let me wash my sins away (V.02:30).

Angels (Chorus, uplifting, repeating for tapestry):

Even if you fail He’ll dust you off and say, “You’re welcome. Come sit next to Us; it’s gonna be a celebration” (T.02:45 – echo with My heart is a ball of love for you V.00:45).

Jesus (redeeming gesture): Isaiah 44:22 — “I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.”

Dad (resolute, moving toward the house): You’re the leader of the church, we praise your goodness, Lord (V.03:00 – fading as vision shifts).

(End Track 3. Pause: Gentle choral hum bridges to next.)

Track 4: The Ides of Mark (Vision 3: Betrayal and Sacrifice – Dad as a Suffering Servant, ~3:25)

Stage: A stark, rocky landscape with a crimson sky, reminiscent of a crucifixion scene. Dad appears as a suffering servant (echoing Isaiah 53), bound with ropes, surrounded by mocking shadows. Son and Daughter stand as witnesses. Beat: Intense hip-hop with mournful strings, building to a dramatic choral climax.

Dad (as Servant, anguished):

It’s now or never, I can’t shoulder all the pain (I.00:30). You left me stranded, so I thought, You always kept an eye on me amongst the raging sea (I.00:45). I know you left, you said you’re coming back, we need the king down here on Earth (I.01:00).

Son (pleading): Take me down to the river, let me wash my sins away (I.01:15 – a cry for cleansing).

Daughter (supporting): It’s the law your love won’t stop, your love won’t stop (I.01:30).

Angels (Chorus, weaving previous themes):

Take me into your arms, my Lord.. Since the storm blew in, I’ve been carrying this (J.02:15 – repeat for emotional depth). Feel like I’m about to fall. If I stumble, will you support my mission? (J.02:30).

Jesus (to Dad, voice steady): Isaiah 53:5 — “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.”

Jesus (to Son and Daughter): Isaiah 50:6 — “I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.”

Jesus (to Audience, revealing sacrifice): Isaiah 50:7 — “Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame.”

Demons surge forward, taunting with sharp movements. Beat drops for a fierce rap battle.

[Demon vs. Angel Rap Duel (~50 sec)]:

Demon: Ides strike, like a spike—hike to hell, bell tolls, roles fold—betrayed, decayed, parade of shade. Oceans rage, page of cage—stage set, debt met, regret yet? Shoulder pain, chain reign—drain the vein, sane? Nah, wane.

Spirit-Filled Person: Words I feel, real deal—steal back zeal, heal the wheel, reveal the seal. Wind’s kin, sin’s thin—begin again, win within. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. (Isaiah 43:2)

Dad (breaking free, turning to Jesus):

Can’t change a stubborn mind, I’ve tried it many times and when you walk the line it’s easier to see you loved me first (I.02:00). It took some time, I’ve been a jerk, but that’s my nature, I’m your creature (I.02:15).

Angels (Chorus, triumphant): He’ll show you how to be If you think that you can’t do well And even if you fail He’ll dust you off and say, “You’re welcome. Come sit next to Us; it’s gonna be a celebration” (T.02:45 – repeat).

Beat: Uplifting hip-hop with a gentle rain soundscape, building to a choral crescendo.

Dad (as Shepherd, reflective):

Wiser men have tried to talk me through it (A.00:30). I’ve at times abandoned hope in lieu of building my own dreams (A.00:45). I thought a garden would be nice, a ton of friends, maybe I could be someone everybody likes (A.01:00). It’s hard, I tried, I gave it one more time (A.01:15).

Son (anxious): I’m terrified I’ll fail, my children they won’t care (A.01:30 – a vulnerable plea).

Daughter (retreating): And I’ll turn in, a fox inside a hole, that darkness had to go (A.01:45).

Angels (Chorus, weaving previous themes):

Take me down to the river, let me wash my sins away (I.01:15 – repeat for cleansing motif). You said You would always be there [you’re] Loosening the knots That’s choking off the flesh’s desires (T.02:15 – overlap).

Jesus (to Audience, offering strength): Isaiah 35:3-4 — “Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, ‘Be strong, do not fear; your God will come.’”

Demons creep in, cloaked in dark greens, sowing doubt with twisting movements. Beat shifts to a tense hip-hop drop.

[Demon vs. Angel Rap Duel (~50 sec)]:

Demon: Flowers fade, shade invades—trade dreams for screams, schemes in streams. Friends flee, see? Tree’s empty—be the end, no mend.

Spirit-Filled Person: Bloom’s true, grew through—dew on you, view anew, pursue His clue. Garden’s start, heart’s art—part the dark, spark His mark. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever. (Isaiah 40:8)

Dad (struggling, then finding purpose):

I chose an absolute king who would guide me when I felt lost (A.02:00). When it makes sense, you dispatch angels to elevate my plans, to what you had in store (A.02:15).
